Strong Motion Instrumentation Program

Strong Motion Data & Internet Quick Reports

California Strong Motion Instrumentation ProgramThe California Strong Motion Instrumentation Program (CSMIP) records the strong shaking of the ground and structures during California earthquakes. Strong-motion data for engineering applications after major earthquakes are distributed via the Internet Quick Report (IQR) at the CISN Engineering Strong Motion Data Center.

ShakeMaps

Recent California Earthquakes

A ShakeMap is a representation of ground shaking produced by an earthquake. ShakeMaps of California are currently generated by USGS (Northern and Southern California) and CGS. Map of recent earthquakes in California and Nevada, with earthquake parameters, maps, and waveform plots. (USGS)

Probabilistic Earthquake Maps

California Integrated Seismic Network

PSHA map A probabilistic seismic hazard map shows the hazard from potential earthquakes. Such maps are typically expressed in terms of the probability of exceeding a certain ground motion. The California Integrated Seismic Network (CISN) is a partnership of federal, state, and university agencies monitoring earthquakes in California.

Seismic Hazards Zonation Program

Alquist-Priolo Fault Zones

Seismic hazards mapThe Seismic Hazards Zonation Program maps landslide zones that require site-specific hazard studies in order to obtain a building permit. Fault ruptureFaults that represent a hazard of surface rupture are mapped in Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Fault Zones.
